Tuition-Free SMCCCD

COVID and the recession have disproportionately damaged the underserved communities of color in San Mateo County.

Latinx people represent 25% of SMC’s population and 50% of COVID cases. The service economy including hotels, restaurants and home maintenance are closed under Governor’s and County Orders to prevent COVID thereby disproportionately denying jobs and income to members of this community.

A tuition-free SMCCCD is necessary to protect and expand the path to economic and social equity for residents of underserved communities and first-generation college families through affordable access to high-quality post-secondary education. It is especially critical due to the COVID pandemic and the associated economic recession.
